The US DOE will cancel US$7.5bn in funding for clean energy projects

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced plans to cancel nearly US$7.6bn in financing for hundreds of energy-related projects. The DOE will terminate 321 financial awards supporting 223 projects. While it did not specify which projects were affected, it noted that the grants had been issued by six agency offices, covering areas such as clean energy, energy efficiency, grid deployment, advanced research, manufacturing, and fossil energy.

The cuts follow a departmental review aimed at ensuring that projects funded under the previous administration were financially viable and aligned with Trump administration policies. Funding recipients have 30 days to appeal, and some have already initiated the process.

In addition, the DOE announced in September 2025 that it intends to cancel more than US$13bn in “unobligated funds” previously pledged to renewable energy initiatives by the former administration, without specifying which programs would be affected.
