US DOE invests US$2.2bn in grid improvement projects (13 GW)

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a US$2.2bn investment in eight projects across 18 US states, expected to add almost 13 GW of new transmission capacity. The projects will focus on building about 1,000 km of new transmission lines and reconductoring more than 645 km of existing lines across 18 states.

The selected projects include two projects for the deployment of new HVDC transmission lines (the Clean Path New York and the North Plains Connector) which are expected to boost grid capacity by about 4.3 GW. The Power Up New England project includes upgrades to points of interconnection in Southeast Massachusetts and Southeast Connecticut to prepare the onshore transmission system for up to 4.8 GW of additional offshore wind. The projects represent a combined public and private investment of almost US$10bn, with US$2.2bn coming from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s US$10.5bn Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) Programme.

The US Department of Energy’s GRIP program was launched in 2021 by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The law designates funding for three mechanisms through 2026: US$2.5bn in competitive grants for Utility and Industry Grid Resilience, US$3bn for Smart Grid grants, and US$5bn for Grid Innovation.
