The US DOE grants US$750m for 52 green hydrogen projects across 24 States

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the allocation of US$750m for 52 green hydrogen projects across 24 US States. The grant aims to reduce the cost of green hydrogen and reinforce the US’ position in the growing clean hydrogen industry. These projects, funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aim to help advance electrolysis technology and improve manufacturing and recycling capabilities for green hydrogen systems and components. The projects are expected to enable the US manufacturing to produce 14 GW/year of fuel cells, and 10 GW/year of electrolysers, enough to produce an additional 1.3 Mt/year of green hydrogen.

The US aims to become a global leader in the field of green hydrogen. The country released the final version of its “US National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap” in June 2023 aimed at accelerating the production, processing, delivery, storage, and use of clean hydrogen. The strategy targets 10 Mt/year of green hydrogen by 2030, 20 Mt/year by 2040, and 50 Mt/year by 2050. The national strategy notably plans to enable electrolysis-based production at US$2/kg in the period 2026-2029 and at US$1/kg in 2030-2035, as well as a multi-gigawatt-scale domestic electrolyser manufacturing capacity in the second half of the 2020’s. The US aims at achieving a carbon-free grid by 2035 and a net-zero emissions economy by 2050.
