The US Department of Energy (DOE) has granted an export authorisation to Venture Global LNG for its proposed Calcasieu Pass 2 (CP2) LNG terminal in the US State of Louisiana. The approval will allow Venture Global to export LNG to non-free trade agreement (non-FTA) countries.
The CP2 LNG terminal, which is being developed by Venture Global and is scheduled to enter full operation in 2026, is expected to have a capacity of 20 Mt/year of LNG and a peak capacity of up to 28 Mt/year under optimal conditions. In July 2023, FERC had given an environmental approval to the project. It will add to the 10 Mt/year Calcasieu Pass LNG project, which started producing LNG in early 2022 and will start commercial operations in April 2025.
This permit issuance marks the fifth LNG-related approval from the DOE since the new US administration took office. The US Government is thus reverting the actions of the previous administration, which in 2024 had paused approvals for LNG export permits pending studies on the economic and environmental impact of US LNG expansion.
In 2024, the US had seven LNG liquefaction export terminals with a combined capacity of 119 bcm/year (88 Mt/year). LNG export capacities are expected to increase by more than 50% by 2026 and LNG export volumes to double by 2050.
