The US Department of Energy has approved an LNG export permit extension for the 18 Mt/year Golden Pass LNG Terminal in Sabine Pass, Texas (United States). The terminal which is owned by QatarEnergy (70%) and ExxonMobil (30%), is currently under construction and is expected to be commissioned laterin 2025. Once operational, it should become the ninth large-scale export terminal operating in the United States, with a capacity of up to 18 Mt/year of natural gas.
The approval comes as the third LNG-related decisions from DOE, following a non-Free Trade Agreement export approval of the 9.5 Mt/year Commonwealth LNG project in Louisiana (US), and an order on rehearing removing barriers for the use of LNG as bunkering fuel.
In 2024, the US had seven LNG liquefaction export terminals with a combined capacity of 119 bcm/year (88 Mt/year). LNG export capacities are expected to increase by more than 50% by 2026 and LNG export volumes to double by 2050.
