US DOE clears US$1bn loan to restart Three Mile Island-1 nuclear reactor

The US Department of Energy has closed a US$1bn loan to partially finance Constellation Energy’s Crane Clean Energy Center (US DOE press release, 18/11/2025). The 835 MW nuclear project is the reboot of the formerly known Three Mile Island located in Londonderry Township, Pennsylvania (US).

The Unit 1 reactor, rated 835 MW, is located adjacent to Three Mile Island Unit 2, which shut down in 1979 and is in the process of being decommissioned after a partial meltdown. The accident did not affect operations at Unit 1, since it is a fully independent facility, but the reactor ceased operations in 2019, though was never officially decommissioned. Once it restarts operations, it should provide enough energy to power approximately 800,000 homes.
