US DOE clears 3 GW TransWest Express power transmission project

The Bureau of Land Management, part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, has given its approval to the TransWest Express (TWE) transmission project, a proposed high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) electric transmission line developed by TransWest Express.

The TWE project will stretch between south-central Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and then to the Marketplace Hub near Hoover Dam in southern Nevada, which provides interconnections to the California, Nevada and Arizona grids. The line will have a capacity of 3,000 MW and will allow California and other Desert Southwest utilities to directly access high-capacity Wyoming wind power generation.

The approval process lasted eight years and the construction of the line should last three years. The TWE project should be operational in 2020.
