The US Department of Energy (DOE) has issued a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for up to US$100m in federal funding to refurbish and modernize the country’s existing coal-fired power plants (US DOE press release, 31/10/2025).
- Applications to “design, implement, test, and validate three strategic opportunities" (wastewater management systems, retrofit systems and advanced coal-natural gas co-firing systems) for refurbishment and retrofit of existing coal power plants within the US will be opened until 7 January 2026.
- The investment is part of a previously announced US$625m federal plan to “expand and reinvigorate America’s coal industry”.
According to Enerdata’s Global Energy & CO2 Data, at the end of 2024, the United States had a total installed capacity of 1,342 GW, of which coal represented 14%.
