The US Department of Energy (DOE) and the company Hecate Energy will enter into realty negotiations to build a 1 GW solar power plant on the Hanford site, located on DOE-owned land in the US State of Washington. The Hanford site was once used to produce plutonium for the Manhattan Nuclear Project. The solar project, which will include battery storage, will be developed as part of the US Government’s Cleanup to Clean Energy initiative.
The Cleanup to Clean Energy initiative, first announced in July 2023, seeks to repurpose parts of DOE-owned lands, parts of which were used by the nation’s nuclear weapons programme, to boost US renewable energy production.
As of end-2023, solar represented over 10% of the US’ installed capacity with 138 GW and 5% of the country’s power generation with 219 TWh. The US’ solar capacity has grown at a fast pace since 2010 (2.6 GW), accelerating since 2016.
