The US DOE adds US$2bn to grid enhancement budget for weather resilience

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced an additional investment of US$2bn for 38 projects to protect its power grid against extreme weather and to extend its transmission capacity. The projects were selected through the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) Program, to boost by more than 7.5 GW the transmission and distribution capacity of the grid, to upgrade over 1,500 km of transmission lines and add over 480 km of new transmission lines, and accelerate the interconnection of new clean energy projects across 42 US states and the District of Columbia.

In August 2024, the US DOE announced a US$2.2bn investment in eight projects across 18 US states, expected to add almost 13 GW of new transmission capacity through its GRIP Program. The GRIP program was launched in 2021 by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), to designate funding for three mechanisms through 2026: US$2.5bn in competitive grants for Utility and Industry Grid Resilience, US$3bn for Smart Grid grants, and US$5bn for Grid Innovation.
