US Department of Energy awards $575m to CCS projects

The Department of Energy awards $575 million for 22 carbon capture and storage (CCS)  R&D projects in 15 states, ranging from evaluation of geologic sites for carbon storage to development of turbo-machinery and engines to help improve carbon capture and storage. The projects, in states including California, Pennsylvania, Colorado, New York and Texas, are being funded from the economic stimulus law.

The Department is awarding $312 million for expanding 3 advanced projects to accelerate the development of industrial CCS technologies at large-scale. Four projects, aiming to develop engines that will help improve CCS when applied to industrial processes, will receive $123m. Five projects on post-combustion will be funded $90m and 10 projects on geological storage site characterization will receive $50m.

The department has invested more than $4 billion in carbon storage and capture, matched by more than $7 billion in private investments.
