US court orders FERC to review environmental approval for 2 LNG export projects

The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia (DC) Circuit has ruled that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commissions (FERC) must review its approval of the Rio Grande LNG and Texas LNG terminals as well as related pipelines in South Texas (United States). According to the decision, the agency violated the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) with "deficient" environmental analyses. However, the FERC authorizations have not been vacated.

NextDecade is developing the 27 Mt/year Rio Grande LNG export terminal in the Port of Brownsville. The project will include 5 trains each capable of producing 5.4 Mt/year of LNG. A final investment decision is expected in 2021. Texas LNG is a 4 Mt/year LNG export terminal developed by a subsidiary of the Dow Group and to be constructed at the Port of Brownsville. A final investment decision is scheduled in 2022. The project should enter commercial operations in 2025-2026.
