US’ BPA identifies 20 transmission projects to develop in Pacific Northwest

The US Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) has identified 13 new transmission substation and line projects to reinforce the Pacific Northwest’s electric grid. The projects represent an investment of about US$3bn, and they could accommodate regional load growth and enable the BPA to add clean energy to the federal grid. The 13 new transmission projects announced emerged from the BPA’s Transmission Service Request Study and Expansion Process 2023 cluster study. Each project must undergo preliminary engineering and environmental review to inform a final decision to construct. The proposed projects include the building of new substations and transformers, the rebuilding of certain circuits, the installation of dynamic reactive upgrades (STATCOM), among other expansion works. To these projects, the BPA adds a previously announced list of projects bringing the total to more than 20 projects with an estimated cost of approximately US$5bn.

The BPA is a Federal Power Marketing Administration headquartered in Oregon (US). It markets electric power, provides transmission, and supports development of energy conservation throughout a 300,000 square mile area that includes Oregon, Washington, Idaho, western Montana, and parts of northern California, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming.
