The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has identified a draft Wind Energy Area (WEA) offshore the US States of Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire holding an estimated 40 GW of capacity, which will be put up for a lease sale in 2024.
The draft WEA in the Gulf of Maine covers over 14,200 km2, ranging from between 37 and 193 km off the coast. The 40 GW potential capacity of the WEA exceeds the current combined offshore wind energy planning goals for the Gulf of Maine states, namely 10 GW for Massachusetts and 3 GW for Maine.
In May 2023, Massachusetts announced plans to invite bids for 3.6 GW of offshore wind capacity to be developed in the State. At the federal level, the United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035 (only 42 MW were operational at the end of 2022).
