The US BOEM starts reviewing Dominion's 2.6 GW offshore wind project

The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has initiated an environmental review for the 2,640 MW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project off the coast of Virginia in the United States. The project is developed by Dominion Energy, which selected Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy to supply 14 MW offshore wind turbines in May 2020; the order is subject to some conditions, including final investment decision (FID), governmental permitting, and other required approvals, and the number of turbines to be deployed will depend on project site conditions. Dominion Energy submitted its Construction and Operations Plan (COP) to the BOEM in December 2020 and submitted an updated COP in June 2021. The project is expected to enter construction as early as in 2024 and to be commissioned in 2026.

The CVOW project is part of Dominion's clean energy strategy, which aims to cut CO2 emissions from the company's power plants by 55% by 2030 and by 80% by 2050; the company is investing in solar and wind, battery storage, pumped hydroelectric storage and other resources that can support intermittent solar and wind generation. In addition, the CVOW project is expected to help the state of Virginia meet its target to produce 100% of its electricity from renewables by 2045.
