The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has released a draft Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) for two proposed offshore wind projects totalling up to 4 GW, namely the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project and the Sunrise Wind project. The draft environmental analysis will be published in the US Federal Register on 16 December 2022, opening a 60-day public comment period that will end on 14 February 2023 for both projects. Feedback on the draft EIS will inform BOEM's preparations for the final EIS.
The CVOW project, developed by Dominion Energy, will have comprise up to 205 wind turbines with a total capacity of 2.6 GW (up to 3 GW) and will be located about 44 km off the coast of Virginia Beach, in the US state of Virginia. Construction is expected to begin in 2024 and the project should become operational in 2026.
The Sunrise Wind project, developed by a joint venture between Ørsted and Eversource, will have a capacity of up to 1,034 MW and will be located off the coast of the US states of New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The project, which will comprise up to 94 turbines, is expected to be fully operational by 2025.
At the federal level, the United States target 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035 (only 42 MW were operational at the end of 2021).
