The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has opened a public consultation to review and comment on a draft for the potential development of six wind lease areas in the New York Bight, an area offshore the US States of New York and New Jersey. BOEM expects to obtain input from diverse stakeholders about the full development of leases in the 490,000 acres (197,500 hectares) area with the potential to create up to 5.6 to 7 GW of offshore wind energy. The Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) should receive public comment during a 45-day period that closes the 26 February 2024. This is the first BOEM conducted regional analysis of offshore renewable energy development and operations on multiple lease areas, due to the proximity of the areas and to speed up the process to achieve the goal of deploying 30 GW of offshore wind energy capacity by 2030.
In March 2022, the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) confirmed the sale of the six offshore wind leases in New York and New Jersey for a total consideration of US$4.3bn, a record amount for any US offshore renewable or conventional energy lease sale. At the regional level, New York and New Jersey have set the target of installing 16 GW of offshore wind by 2035.
