US BOEM greenlights 2.8 GW offshore wind project in New Jersey

The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has awarded Construction and Operations Plan (COP) to the 2.8 GW Atlantic Shores offshore wind project in New Jersey (United States). The Atlantic Shores wind project is being developed by a 50:50 partnership between Shell and EDF and is located about 14 km off New Jersey.

The project consists of two plants, the Atlantic Shores Wind Projects 1 and 2, rated 1.5 GW and 1.3 GW, respectively. They are expected to generate enough to power close to 1 million homes with renewable energy through up to 200 total wind turbine generators and up to 10 offshore substations with subsea transmission cables potentially making landfall in Atlantic City and Sea Girt, New Jersey.

The State of New Jersey aims to achieve 100% clean energy by 2035, with 11 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2040.
