US BOEM gives final approval to Avangrid’s 2.6 GW offshore wind project

The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has given the final approval to the New England Wind Construction and Operations Plan (COP), authorising the construction and operation of the New England Wind 1-2 projects, with a combined capacity of 2.6 GW. The New England Wind project is being developed by Avangrid, a US renewable energy company majority-owned by the Spanish energy group Iberdrola, and is located around 37 km south of the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard, where it will be developed in two phases (791 MW New England Wind 1 and 1,080 MW New England Wind 2) comprising up to 129 wind turbines that are expected to generate enough energy to power about a million homes. Construction could start as early as 2025, with commissioning in 2029.

At the federal level, the United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and 15 GW of floating wind capacity by 2035. At the end of 2023, the US only had 42 MW of offshore wind capacity.
