The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has designated two final Wind Energy Areas (WEAs) off the west coast state of Oregon that can collectively host a potential capacity of 2.4 GW. The two WEAs are The Coos Bay WEA (248 km2 at 51 km from shore) and the Brookings WEA (542 km2 at about 29 miles from shore) totalling approximately 789 km2. They avoid 98% of the areas recommended for exclusion due to their importance as commercial fishing grounds. The WEAs will be subject to another public comment period if BOEM decides to move forward with a lease sale in either of them.
At the end of 2023, over 10 GW of wind power capacity was under construction and over 60 GW under development (of which over 36 GW was offshore). At the federal level, the United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and 15 GW of floating wind capacity by 2035. The country also plans to reach 110 GW or more of offshore wind by 2050.
