The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has completed the environmental review to assess potential wind development activities within six wind lease areas offshore the US states of New York and New Jersey. The programmatic environmental impact statement (PEIS) consisted of a broad overview of sector development in the New York Bight wind energy area (WEA), which covers about 2,000 km2, determining the potential to develop up to 7 GW of offshore wind energy, enough to power up to 2 million homes.
In January 2024, the BOEM opened a public consultation to review and comment on the potential development of six wind lease areas in the New York Bight sold for a total of US$4.3bn in March 2022 to six consortiums, including Ocean Winds, Attentive Energy, Bight Wind, Atlantic Shore Offshore Wind, Invenergy Wind Offshore and Mid Atlantic Offshore Wind.
At the regional level, New York aims to achieve 70% renewable energy generation by 2030 and develop 9 GW of offshore wind by 2035, while New Jersey targets 11 GW of offshore wind by 2040. At the national level, the United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
