The US’ Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has completed its environmental review for the proposed Empire Wind Farm Projects, located off the coast of the US State of New York and which will have a combined capacity of 2,076 MW. The BOEM plans to issue a Record of Decision on whether to approve the projects in autumn 2023.
The Empire Wind 1 and Empire Wind 2 projects are being developed by a joint venture between Norway’s Equinor and the UK’s BP. The joint venture is planning the installation of up to 57 wind turbines for Empire Wind 1 and up to 90 wind turbines for Empire Wind 2.
At the federal level, the United States target 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035 (only 42 MW were operational at the end of 2022).
