US BOEM assigns area in the US Gulf of Maine for wind development (15 GW)

The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has announced the availability of the Wind Energy Area (WEA) located in the US Gulf of Maine after finalizing its respective Environmental Assessment (EA).

The review evaluated the potential environmental impacts associated with activities related to the issuance of commercial wind energy leases, off the coasts of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, excluding the installation of offshore wind turbines that would be assessed in a separate environmental review. The final EA found no significant impact on the environment in the eight areas with potential to develop up to 15 GW, enough energy to power more than 5 million homes.

The US Government has approved 15 GW of offshore wind projects, enough to power over 5 million homes, to achieve its goal to install 30 GW of offshore energy by 2030. At the end of 2023, the US had a total offshore wind capacity of 42 MW.
