The US Department of Energy (DOE) has approved exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Alaska LNG project, which is currently being developed on the Kenai peninsula in southern Alaska (US). The project received approval for exports of LNG to countries with which the United States does not have a free trade agreement. The LNG project will comprise a 20 Mt/year liquefaction facility (three trains) and a 1,300 km pipeline to transport gas from northern Alaska across the state.
The project is estimated to require an investment of US$39bn and is expected to be operational in 2030, pending the required permits and a final investment decision. It is being developed by Alaska Gasline Development Corporation (AGDC) under a mandate from the Alaska legislature to commercialise Alaska’s North Slope natural gas. The North Slope fields are expected to deliver on average about 3.5 bcf/day (36 bcm/year) of natural gas.
The US exported more than 146 bcm of LNG in 2021, with a liquefaction capacity of nearly 74 Mt/year.
