The US Department of the Interior (DOI), through its Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), has approved the plan for construction and operations of the 1.1 GW Ocean Wind 1 offshore wind project, developed by Denmark’s Ørsted and located off Atlantic City in the US state of New Jersey.
The offshore wind project will comprise up to 98 turbines and will require the construction of three offshore substations. Once completed it will be able to supply electricity to about 380,000 American households. First power from Ocean Wind 1 is expected for the end of 2024, while full commissioning is scheduled for 2025. Ørsted acquired full ownership of the project in January 2023 after purchasing a 25% stake from the US’ Public Service Enterprise Group.
This is the third approval of an offshore wind project in the US under the current administration, following the 800 MW Vineyard Wind project offshore Massachusetts and the 130 MW South Fork Wind project offshore Rhode Island and New York.
