The US and Japan agree on 9.2 GW gas-fired power project in Ohio (US)

The US government has announced a USD550bn trade deal with Japan that includes a USD33bn gas-fired power plant to be developed in the vicinity of Portsmouth, Ohio (United States) (US government press release, 17/02/2026). The power plant is expected to have a generation capacity of 9.2 GW and will be operated by SB Energy (a subsidiary of SoftBank) to “create an integrated platform capable of supplying reliable, large-scale, dispatchable energy”.

The announcement includes the Deepwater Crude Oil Export Terminal (Texas GulfLink), a USD2.1bn project that will be developed in Brazoria (Texas) with Sentinel Midstream as its operator, and a USD600m Diamond Grit Facility in Georgia.

The United States is the largest natural gas producer worldwide and it has a significant role within the country, with it dominating the country’s electric capacities (43%) and its power mix (42%) by the end of 2024.
