The US and Russia submit their Climate Action Plans

The United States and Russia have submitted their new climate action plan to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The United States has confirmed the target set in November 2014 to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 26%-28% by 2025 compared to 2005 levels, with an effort to reach a 28% reduction. By 2020, GHG emissions should be cut by 17% compared to 2005 levels; achieving the 2025 target will require a further emission reduction of 9-11% beyond the 2020 target compared to the 2005 baseline and a substantial acceleration of the 2005-2020 annual pace of reduction, to 2.3-2.8%/year, or an approximate doubling. This target is consistent with a straight line emission reduction pathway from 2020 to emission reductions of 80% or more by 2050.

Russia aims to limit GHG emissions to 70-75% of 1990 levels by the year 2030, subject to the maximum possible account of absorbing capacity of forests; this would correspond to a 25%-30% reduction compared to 1990.
