Uruguay releases roadmap for green hydrogen and derivatives

The Uruguayan government has published its Roadmap for Green Hydrogen and Derivatives, presenting its strategy to reach a production of 1 Mt/year of green hydrogen by 2040. The country’s plan includes the installation of approximately 18 GW of renewable energy capacity and 9 GW of electrolysers.

The roadmap considers three development phases, with the first one lasting until 2025 (focused on preparing the market and building pilot projects to produce and use green hydrogen), the second going from 2026 to 2030 (scaling up the domestic market and implementing first export-scale projects), and the last phase focusing on the consolidation of the past phases by reaching its 2040 objectives. The strategy considers the intermediate goals of installing 300 MW of electrolyser capacity by 2030 and 3 GW by 2035.

At the end of 2022, renewables represented 91% of Uruguay's power mix (down from 98% in 2019, a year with high hydropower production).
