Update of biofuels support incentives by the Department for Transport (UK)

The UK Department for Transport released the response to the 2017 Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation, which proposed several changes to the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation Order (RTFO). The UK government intends to rise the supply and the sustainability of renewable transport fuels (biofuels) in order to meet its climate change commitments targets. For this purpose, the RTFO obligation levels will be increased to 9.75% in 2020 and 12.4% in 2030 while an additional target for development fuels has been set at 0.1% in 2019 and 2.8% in 2032. Besides, the proposals include introducing a cap for fuels made from agricultural crops starting at 4% in 2018 and falling gradually from 2021 to 3% in 2026 until 2% in 2032.

The RTFO was introduced back in 2008 and obliged fuel suppliers to sell a certain percentage of renewable fuel, which was set at 4.75% until the current change.
