The US and Indian governments have released a joint statement calling for Westinghouse and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to complete rapidly the techno-commercial offer for the construction of six nuclear reactors in India. In March 2019, the two countries signed an agreement on security and civil nuclear cooperation, including the construction of six US-made nuclear reactors in India.
Westinghouse started to design the project after the conclusion of a US-India civil nuclear agreement more than a decade ago. In 2012, Westinghouse and NPCIL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the future construction of six AP-1000 nuclear reactors totalling 6 GW at Mithi Virdi in Gujarat. Due to land acquisition hurdles, the project was relocated to Kovvada in Andhra Pradesh - where it also faces a local opposition - and Westinghouse’s bankruptcy delayed once again the project in 2017. Brookfield Asset Management took over Westinghouse in 2018. The Kovvada nuclear project in India has been strongly supported by the current US administration.
