Uniper's electricity sales declined by 13.3% in 2019

German energy company Uniper has announced its 2019 full year results. In 2019, the volume of electricity generated by Uniper decreased by 8.7% to 104 TWh, as the group sold its generation business in France. Similarly, its electricity sales declined by 13.3% to 613 TWh, whereas its natural gas deliveries increased by 8% to 2,179 TWh. The company reported an EBIT of €863m (€865m in 2018) and net income of €644m (-€442m in 2018). The group plans to make its European power generation portfolio climate-neutral by 2034, involving more than €1.2bn investment over the 2020-2022 period in low-carbon projects.

In February 2020, Uniper presented a closure program for its coal-fired power plants in Germany. The company intends to close about 1.5 GW of coal-fired capacity by year-end 2022, corresponding to three generating units at the Scholven power plant in Gelsenkirchen and the Wilhelmshaven power plant. In addition, Uniper plans to shut down another 1.4 GW at Staudinger and Heyden power plants by 2025 at the latest. The 1.1 GW Datteln 4 coal-fired power plant is still expected to be commissioned; the project is in trial operations and could begin operations as soon as mid-2020. It will be the last remaining coal-fired power plant in the Uniper portfolio in Germany.
