Uniper has decided to return its mothballed Irsching 4 and 5 gas-fired power plants in Bavaria (Germany) to the market on 1 October 2020, as a fall in gas prices allows better commercial operations. Uniper owns a 100% stake in the 561 MW Irsching 4 CCGT power plant, which was commissioned in 2011. Uniper also owns a 50.2% stake in the 846 MW Irsching 5 that was commissioned in 2010, in partnership with N-ERGIE (25.2%), Mainova (15.6%) and ENTEGA (9%). Both have been idle since September 2019.
Indeed, in September 2019, Uniper and its partners notified Tennet and BNetzA (Federal Network Agency) for the fourth time that the units were not in suitable conditions to operate economically beyond autumn 2020 and that they would be subject to a temporary closure between October 2020 and the end of September 2021. However, the Reserve Power Plants Ordinance (Netzreserveverordnung) prevented the closure of the units, that would be used to maintain the stability of the grid if required.
