The German energy company Uniper has obtained preliminary approval to construct a hydrogen‑ready combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant with a planned capacity of up to 890 MW, designed to deliver flexible and dispatchable power generation in Germany (Uniper press release, 30/04/2026).
The preliminary approval concerns a facility referred to as Unit 8, which will be built at the site of the Staudinger power station in Großkrotzenburg. The first partial permit, covering subsurface infrastructure, is expected to be submitted in the third quarter of 2026, with the second partial permit for the construction and operation of the plant scheduled for the second quarter of 2027.
“Uniper is progressively transforming the Staudinger power station into a future‑ready energy hub. The focus is on decommissioning conventional plant components that are no longer needed, modernizing existing infrastructure, and preparing for new uses. In addition to Staudinger 8, these include the exploration of battery storage solutions and, in the longer term, the establishment of data centers,” according to the company’s press release.
