Uniper (Germany) posts a €4.1bn loss in 2021

The German energy group Uniper has released its 2021 results, posting a €4.1bn loss in 2021 (due to a discrepancy in IFRS’ treatment of marking-to-market of hedging transactions and hedged positions). Adjusted net income was €906m, compared to €774m in 2020.

The group owned and operated 31.6 GW of power plants at the end of 2021 (-2 GW compared to 2020), with 48% of gas, 20% of hard coal, 12% of hydro, 9% of other energy sources, 6% of lignite and 5% of nuclear. Most of the capacity is located in Germany (9.4 GW), Russia (9 GW), the United Kingdom (6.4 GW) and Sweden (4.7 GW). The group's total generation increased by 15% to 109 TWh, with 54% of gas, 17% of hard coal, 12% of hydro, 12% of nuclear and 6% of lignite. Gas-fired generation rose by 54% in 2021, coal-fired generation by 60%, and nuclear production by 12%. Uniper produced 43.2 TWh in Russia in 2021 (+8%), 19.1 TWh in Germany (+32%), 21.1 TWh in Sweden (+1%), 16.7 TWh in the United Kingdom (+58%), 6.5 TWh in the Netherlands (+5%) and 2.3 TWh in Hungary (+4.5%).

Uniper's power purchases and owned generation declined by 16% to 468 TWh, and electricity sales declined by 16% to 465 TWh. In addition, Uniper sold 2,256 TWh of natural gas in 2021 (+2.4%).
