UN reports insufficient progress towards Paris Agreement commitments

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has reported that updated national climate plans remain insufficient to place the world on a pathway consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5°C under the Paris Agreement (UNFCCC press release, 27/10/2026).

According to the UNFCCC's latest assessment, countries continue to expand economy-wide climate policies and long-term decarbonisation strategies, but current commitments and implementation efforts remain below the level required to achieve the Paris Agreement temperature objectives.

The report took into account 127 new NDC's representing 154 out of 194 parties of the Paris Agreement, accounting for about 71% of the world's total GHG emissions, and found progress in the adoption of national climate measures and planning frameworks, while highlighting the need for accelerated implementation and stronger emissions reduction efforts.

According to the UNFCCC, GHG emission reductions are projected to peak and decline 2035, reaching 6% below 2019 levels on average, which would represent a warming ranging between 1.7-2.3°C by the end of the century.
