The UK’s SSEN unveils transmission programme to connect 11 GW of offshore wind

SSEN Transmission has unveiled a GBP10bn (€11.6bn) programme of investment into the transmission network across the north of Scotland (United Kingdom), which is aimed at enabling the connection of up to 11 GW of new offshore wind capacity through ScotWind projects, enough to power more than ten million homes in the UK.

SSEN Transmission’s "Pathway to 2030 Programme" will include investment in several new onshore and sub-sea transmission links as part of a wider upgrade of the electricity transmission network across the UK in order to meet climate change and power supply security targets. Projects include two 2 GW high voltage direct current links from Peterhead in Scotland to England (Eastern Green Links 2 and 3), two subsea links in Scottish waters and cable link upgrades onshore.

In total, the programme will enable the connection of over one fifth of the UK Government’s 50 GW by 2030 offshore wind goal.
