UK unveils plans to support chargepoints for electric vehicles

The British government has opened a consultation on plans to fit every new-build home with an electric car chargepoint. Under the government's proposed commitment, chargepoints would use "smart" technologies to encourage electric vehicles owners to charge them during off-peak periods and to prepare the energy system for mass uptake of electric cars. In addition, all new rapid and higher powered chargepoints would provide "pay as you go" debit or credit card payment options by spring 2020.

Under current regulations, electric car owners can apply for a grant of up to £500 (around €550) off the cost of installing a charge point at their residence. The British government aims to implement long term consistent incentives and to roll out the right charging infrastructure to boost the development of electric cars. It has already committed to invest £274m (€303m) in the Faraday Battery Challenge and earlier investments through the Automotive Propulsion Centre.
