UK regulator approves 945 MW Hinkley Point B nuclear plant decommissioning

The UK Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has approved the decommissioning of EDF Energy’s Hinkley Point B nuclear power plant (ONR press release, 30/10/2025).

  • The subsidiary of French state-owned EDF had switched off the 945 MW nuclear power plant in 2022.
  • The facility, located in Somerset (England, United Kingdom), operated for nearly 46 years and had started presenting ageing issues, as cracks were found in graphite bricks from the reactor's core.
  • Both of its reactors have been defuelled to pass the site into its decommissioning phase.

EDF is currently developing Hinkley Point C, which started construction in 2018. The 3.6 GW project was originally scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025, is now expected to become operational in 2029-2030 at the earliest, with the overall cost revised to between GBP31bn (€36bn) to GBP34bn (€40bn) at 2015 prices.
