The UK government has launched its Onshore Wind Taskforce Strategy to unlock 27 to 29 GW of onshore wind projects in the United Kingdom by 2030. The strategy removes the defacto ban on onshore wind in England, which would lead to deploy 10-12 GW more than would have been deployed under historic growth rates, with England contributing around 2 GW by 2030.
The Strategy contains 42 actions to speed up stalled projects, support the repowering of ageing turbines, and provide the regulatory tools to help planning authorities and developers to streamline delivery. Besides pushing for improvements in planning, site surveying and acceleration on connection of low-carbon generation to the grid, the strategy also plans to improve the public perception of the onshore wind developers, reach new commitments to reduce blocks to onshore wind due to aviation and defence concerns, to establish a joint Government/industry Onshore Wind Council, and to undertake supply chain research to better understand constraints and opportunities across the onshore wind sector.
The strategy is aligned with the country's its Clean Power 2030 ambition to install 27–29 GW of onshore wind capacity by 2030.
