The UK MMO approves the 1 GW UK-France power interconnection project

The United Kingdom Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has approved the 1,000 MW Interconnexion France-Angleterre (IFA2) HVDC link project, which is planned to be commissioned in 2020. As per the UK TEN-E regulations, the project has now obtained all the required statutory consents and can move forward. The project is being carried out by the electricity transmission system operators (TSOs) National Grid IFA2 (National GridUK) and RTE.



The project will operate at ± 320 kV DC cable system and also comprises a 25 km onshore route in France running from the Tourbe converting station (Normandy) to the landing point in the neighbouring of Merville-Franceville (Normandy). In Great Britain, the connection point would be a new substation off Chilling Lane near Fareham, Hampshire. The two high-voltage direct current HVDC light converter stations, the submarine and land power cables will be designed and manufactured by Prysmian and ABB.
