The UK greenlights the development of a 1.1 GW offshore wind project in Wales

The UK’s Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero has given its approval for the development of the 1.1 GW Awel y Môr offshore wind project, located off the coast of Wales (UK) and develop by the German company RWE. It will feature up to 50 wind turbines, able to power more than 500,000 households, and is expected to be operational before 2030.

The project will be located alongside the operational 576 MW Gwynt y Môr offshore wind, also operated by RWE. RWE is developing the wind park in a joint venture with Stadtwerke München and Siemens Financial Services which hold 30 and 10% stakes, respectively. RWE already operates the North Hoyle and Rhyl Flats offshore wind parks in northern Wales.

The UK plans to reach 50 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 (13.8 GW as of end-2022).
