The UK greenlights an up to 500 MW solar project to be built in Essex

The UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero has approved the construction of the up to 500 MW Longfield Solar Farm, which is developed by a joint venture between EDF Renewables and Padero Solar and will be located near Terling, in Essex County (south-eastern United Kingdom). The project, currently one of the UK’s largest solar project to be approved, will include a solar PV array generating station, battery storage facilities, and grid connection infrastructure. The Longfield Solar Farm will span 380 hectares and will be able to power more than 60,000 British households.

Several commercial scale solar projects were recently announced in the UK, notably the 800 MW Springwell project, the 350 MW Malar Pass solar project and the 600 MW Tween Bridge solar project, all located in Lincolnshire County, as well as the 840 MW Botley West Solar project located in Oxfordshire.

At the end of 2022, solar represented about 13% of the UK’s installed capacity with 13.8 GW and 4% of its power generation with 14.2 TWh. The UK currently has over 16 GW of solar projects under construction or development.
