The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has granted development consent for the transmission assets associated with the 480 MW Morecambe and 1.5 GW Morgan offshore wind projects in the Irish Sea, enabling their connection to the national grid (British government press release, 14/09/2026).
The consent covers offshore export cables, onshore landfall infrastructure, onshore export and grid connection cables, substations, circuit breaker compounds and related infrastructure. The application was submitted in October 2024 and approved following a six-month examination and a positive recommendation from the Examining Authority.
The Morgan wind project received a Development Consent Order (DCO) in August 2025, but its lease was abandoned in early 2026 by developers JERA Nex bp and EnBW. The site is due to be reallocated through an accelerated tender process by the Crown Estate. Meanwhile, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners' Morecambe project received a DCO for its generation assets in December 2025.
The UK had an installed offshore wind capacity of 16.4 GW, representing around 15% of total installed capacity in 2025 (Enerdata’s Global Energy & CO2 data).
