The British government intends to hold a T-1 "top up" auction in summer 2019 for delivery the following winter (2019-2020), in spite of the European Court of Justice having cancelled the state aid approval given by the European Commission for the country's power capacity market. The European Court of Justice suspended the power capacity market in November 2018 and the UK government hopes to restart it as early as possible.
The next steps will include the launching of a formal investigation by the European Commission in early 2019, while the UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) will explore additional actions in order to ensure continuity in supplier charging arrangements.
The British power capacity market was established by the government in order to guarantee security of supply since the available power was at risk of being insufficient in the near future for the purposes of satisfying peak-demand periods.
