The UK Government greenlights Ørsted’s 2.6 GW Hornsea 4 offshore wind project

The UK Government has granted its development consent to the Danish renewable energy company Ørsted for the construction of the 2.6 GW Hornsea 4 offshore wind project, which will be located 69 km off the Yorkshire coast in north-eastern England (United Kingdom). The wind project will comprise 180 turbines, installed over an area of 468 km2. Ørsted is expected to unveil the detailed design and the indicative layout of the project by the end of 2024.

Ørsted first submitted the application for the development consent order for Hornsea 4 to the Planning Inspectorate in September 2021. The project is the 126th Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project and the 73rd energy application to have been examined by The Planning Inspectorate within the UK’s Planning Act of 2008.

Ørsted has 13 operational offshore wind farms in the UK, providing 6.2 GW of renewable electricity to the country. They include the Hornsea 1 (1.2 GW) and Hornsea 2 (1.3 GW) wind parks. Hornsea 3 (2.8 GW), which was awarded a contract for difference from the UK government in 2022, is currently under development. The UK plans to reach 50 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 (11.3 GW as of end-2021).
