The UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero has awarded a development consent order (DCO) for the 600 MW Cottam Solar Project, to be developed by Island Green Power in Lincolnshire, England (United Kingdom). The project will comprise four ground mounted solar PV generating plants, four onsite substations and a battery energy storage system (BESS).
The project is expected to be able to power 180,000 British households once completed. Island Green Power has already delivered 14 solar projects in the UK and Ireland.
The UK aims to fully decarbonise the power system by 2035 thanks to renewables and to large-scale nuclear projects. At the end of 2023, the UK’s share of carbon-free power generation reached 63%. In 2023, solar accounted for 14% of the country’s installed capacity, with 15.6 GW. Over 2 GW of solar is currently under construction and more than 19 GW is under development.
