The UK’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has awarded planning permission to three solar projects with a combined capacity of 1,350 MW in England (United Kingdom). The awardees were Low Carbon’s 500 MW Gate Burton project in Lincolnshire, PS Renewables and Tribus Clean Energy's 500 MW Sunnica, Windel Energy and Canadian Solar’s 350 MW Mallard Pass project. The applications proposed the installation of solar PV generating panels, an on-site electrical storage and connection infrastructure. The 500 MW Sunnica Energy Project also includes the installation of electrical battery storage technology, and associated infrastructure for connection to the national grid, including an extension to the Burwell National Grid Substation.
The government expects to signal its intent to invest in major renewables projects to private investors. The UK aims to fully decarbonise the power system by 2035 thanks to renewables and to large-scale nuclear projects. At the end of 2023, the UK’s share of carbon-free power generation reached 63%.
