The UK’s Government has nationalised the British power transmission system operator National Grid to create the new National Energy System Operator (NESO) in a GBP630m (€747m) deal to support energy security, help to keep bills down and accelerate the government’s clean power mission. The new NESO is planned to be an independent, publicly owned body, with more oversight over electricity and gas distribution. The company is expected to work alongside Great British Energy to deploy renewable energy and overseeing the strategic planning and design of the country’s electricity and gas networks to reduce the prices of electricity and increase the UK’s energy independence. The deal is expected to be closed by 1 October 2024.
The United Kingdom aims to decarbonise the electricity sector by 2030 and to develop up to 50 GW of offshore wind by 2030 (5 GW of which is floating offshore wind).
