The UK Government has announced that it is no longer considering a CfD at this stage for the power project developed by Xlinks. The project aims to deliver electricity from a 10.5 GW solar and wind complex in Morocco’s Guelmim Oued Noun region supported by 5GW/20 GWh of battery storage to Devon, in south-west England, via two 1.8 GW HVDC subsea cables running 3,800 km.
As originally planned, the project would have delivered 3.6 GW of renewable electricity to the UK for 20 hours a day on average, enough to power 7 million households.
In April 2023, Xlinks closed a funding round for the project, attracting early investment from Abu Dhabi-based TAQA, TotalEnergies, and UK firm Octopus Energy. Completion was originally targeted for 2030. The company is now expected to pursue alternative commercial opportunities.
