UK approves two electricity interconnections with Belgium and Norway

The British energy regulator Ofgem has approved the financing and regulatory regime for the Nemo project, a 1 GW electricity interconnection line with Belgium that should be completed in 2019. The project, which will link Richborough in Kent to Zeebrugge in Belgium, is estimated at £0.5bn (€0.6bn). The final investment decision is now with the developers, namely Elia (Belgium TSO) and National Grid. In December 2013, the Thanet and Dover District Councils (UK) granted planning permission to go ahead with developments at the former Richborough power station site.

In addition, the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has given its consent for the development of a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnection between the Northumberland coast (UK) and Hylen (southwest Norway), the North Sea Network (NSN) project. Developed by National Grid and Statnett, the 1.4 GW interconnector would be commissioned in October 2019. The final investment decision is expected in spring 2015.
